In Summary

The sugar millers had their coach Carlos Katywa, a south African import, sending clear messages of his intentions to retain the title that they won last season.

The 2025/2026 season of the Kenya Cup rugby 15s resumes this Saturday, February 21, 2026, with matchweek eight fixtures this week after a two-week recess, with defending champions Kabras RFC being trailed closely by Menengai Oilers.

The sugar millers had their coach Carlos Katywa, a south African import, sending clear messages of his intentions to retain the title that they won last season, in a bid to go for their sixth overall and attempt to destabilize Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), who have won eight titles and are the most successful club in the history of the competition, even though Menengai Oilers might spoil a last minute party.

"There is nothing that can beat success; it gives you a feeling like no other, but again, we have to work for it until the last minute, making sure that all is ours," Katywa had been quoted earlier on, emphasizing the need for his charges to stay alert and concentrate fully on winning their remaining fixtures.

The five-time champions' next four remaining Kenya Cup fixtures will have Blak Blad away on 21st February, Nondies on 28th the same month at home, KCB away on seventh March, and finally, seven days later on 14th March, Menengai Oilers at home, a game that might change the fortunes and their intentions for a sixth title in history.

Katywa's charges have opened the gap with an unbeaten record of seven wins out of seven, a massive +448 points difference that has accrued 35 points in their pockets, but despite their efforts, they are locked on points with Menengai Oilers, who are also unbeaten and boast a +358 PD, a balanced and fierce title race that might go to the wire on the last day.

KCB Rugby are third on 34 points, just one behind the leaders, while KU Blak Blad, who are fourth, remain inside the playoff places despite a negative points difference after four wins.

Number five is Strathmore Leos, who have lost four, but remain in the top half, while Nondescript RFC comes in a paltry sixth, and Daystar Falcons on seventh position, both are level on two wins apiece, as the Varsity side surprisingly has made the biggest leap, climbing sharply after strong recent performances.

Impala RFC are eighth, after a difficult start of the season, but the Gazelles have surged up the table and are now back in contention for survival and possibly a late playoff push, but the biggest relief goes to MMUST, who climbed to tenth place, moving out of the relegation zone after their two wins from five matches which have kept their survival hopes alive with two games in hand.

The last two positions are occupied by Nakuru RFC, who are 11th and bottom-placed Kisumu RFC at 12th, both with only a win each and heavy negative points differences; now they are residents of the relegation zone and face a tough fight to stay in the top flight.
